TOURISM:

Zanzibar was named “Zanzibar Africa’s Leading  Beach Destination” for 2021 and  Africa’s Leading Green Hotel 2021:  Hotel Verde Zanzibar-Azam Luxury Resort and spa, by the World Travel Awards, the Organization announced.

” We won big in this edition and we are extremely proud”, said Lela Mussa, Minister of Tourism and Heritage. “These awards give encouragement to the Zanzibar tourism industry and confirm the public-private efforts to maintain our position and overcome the toughest crisis we have ever faced.”

World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to “acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries,” the company say:

“Despite the ongoing global challenges, the appetite for travel has reached unprecedented levels,” World Travel Awards added.

According to the country’s official data, Zanzibar generated Sh69.1 billion ($29.893 million) in revenue in June 2021, compared to the Sh47.5 billion ($20.549 million) collected in the same period in 2020.

The total tourism revenue generated from hotel and restaurant levies, tour operator levy, revenue stamps, airport and seaport service charges, road development fund and petroleum levy amounted to Sh8.7 billion ($3.76 million).
